Hi all!
So this is where we air our intellectual thoughts and give space to our ideas
And for starters, let’s give Descartes’ immortal quote a spin…
Comment on “Cogito Ergo Sum”. Does it hold any truth for you? If so, what? And if not, why not?
Let’s see how this goes, and we’ll tweak it along the way
I’m so very glad to be taking this journey with you all, and I’m sure we’ll all have a blast!
Alex

It does hold a truth in me. This is because when each time I think of something, I really am thinking of something. Example: I think of her and therefore I really am thinking of her. It somehow proves our self-consciousness.

hello mr alex,
about the Descartes’ quote, “Cogito Ergo Sum”, it does hold some truth for me.
well, when i was 10 years old, i thought that getting a “just pass” grade for my exams was good. But when i tried to score for my PSLE exams, i got straight “C”s which means i “just pass” the exams. therefore, i “think therefore i am” in the NA stream(which i do not want to be in).
but now being in the NA stream is not so bad at least i meet an great teacher like you. so lets blast ahead together with us (5A1) in achieving our targets and goals.

Hi guys,
I’m glad to see some posts coming in
Just to nudge you all along… consider the words carefully: “I think, therefore I am”. Does it imply that who you want to be involves thinking about it? And if so, what specifically should you think about in order for it to become real (”I am”)?
Consider the example I gave in class about the two basketball teams, one that practised shooting hoops, and the other visualising shooting hoops… how does this help to make sense of Descartes’ words?
Keep thinking!

“Cogito Ergo Sum” which means ‘i think therefore i am’. but what it really means is that when you think and visualise what you want to be, you will. this phrase holds a truth in me. when you think you can’t achieve something you want to be, then you won’t achive anything. sometimes its not just about doing it, but to visualise it. and to think and visualise, you need to believe in yourself. without beleiving in yourself, its almost impossible to think let alone visualise. i think of performing infront of a crowd. but i didnt beleive i could do it. that is why i couldn’t achieve what i want to do. but now, im trying to tell myself that i can do it and i will do it. see me perform soon. teacher’s day. if im selected. i mean, i will be selected.

hi there mr alex..
im here today to tell about “coito ergo sum”
which simply means i think therfore i am
there was a time in my primary school when i thought
i was going to be in the school soccer team
which turned out that i was ot selected for it
my world fell apart during that time
i think that i was goodtherefore
i was confident of getting selected
then i was rejected….

My little thoughts on “Cogito Ergo Sum” which mean “I think therefore i am”.Well it does hold some truth meaning for me.I will brake down the quote in two parts.
Firstly,”I think” it means that, we have to believe in what we can do first, than we will able to set our target in our mind to let us reach that goal*
Secondly,”therefore I am” it means that,we have to work hard to reach that goal even when we face difficulties on the way.Until you have over come all this, thats when we can become the person who we want to be*
I believe i have use this quote before in my life. One example would be from my secondary school education. When i was in secondary one,i was in a Normal technical class. From the eyes of others,i would always felt that they are looking down on us.I even felt the teachers were looking down on us.
However,i never once given up on myself, and so are my friends too.I had saw two of my friends from normal technical class being promoted to a normal academic class after sec one.Ever since than,i looked at them as and good example of a success student, as a way to motivate myself to move on to a academice class.
Than at the end of sec 2,my ‘Goal’ came truth.I was being promoted to and academic class. But in return i have to remain as a sec 2 academic student. But im glad that i was given this opportunity ,as non of my other classmates were able to.
Although now im still struggling to achieve my last destination of secondary school life,i will “think” of myself being the one getting the grades that i earn for,and “therefore to be who im going to be in the future”*

Hmm so im suppose to talk about “Cogito Ergo Sum” which mean “I think therefore i am”. It seems really true to me, lets talk about a recent event which happened that makes me believe in “Cogito Ergo Sum”. It was my nLevel ! I was taking my nlevel and im sure that there are people or TEACHERS thinking that i wouldnt be able to make it but i thought that i would be able to make it to sec 5 and now i am a sec 5 student =). IT IS TRUE!! lol

I think that this quote “cogito ergo sum” is a great quote. Its meaning - “I think, therefore I am” does hold some truth in a way. I believe that to achieve something, one have to think & visualise about what he/she wants to achieve. It’s only by visualising
that the thing that you want to achieve could come true. During the high achievers programme, Coach Yvonne said something about this guy who wanted to do a balancing act. Before he did the act, he said that he might fall down. I reckon that at this moment, he visualise himself falling down & in the end, he really did fall & die. In a way, it shows that visualising is a powerful thing & that what you think is what you really might become.

Hello Mr ALEX (:
”COGITO ERGO SUM ” eh .
What i find rather fascinating about this phrase , which also translates ” I THINK , THEREFORE I AM ” is that it impacts each and everyone of our lives . We DOUBT , therefore we THINK , therefore we ARE ! . When we make a statement about something , we either work towards it or wish for it . Rene Descartes , who made this philosophical statement is actually a very -very smart man. His definition of ”COGITO ERGO SUM” is actually if someone is wondering whether or not he exists, that is in and of itself proof that he does exist (because, at the very least, there is an “I” who is doing the thinking). HAHA ! Surprisingly he makes SENSE ! ”COGITO ERGO SUM” does hold a truth in me , and i know im not the only one . I would be surprised though if anyone says that it does NOT hold a truth in them . My weakness is that i fall prey to failure . When i encounter a FAILURE in my life , i give up . And if i come across a failure when im doing something , i get stuck and i would be afraid to MOVE ON ! I have to be honest with you Mr ALEX , i have not gone through a dilemma whereby ” COGITO ERGO SUM ” actually comes to my rescue , but learning this phrase has made me feel more CONFIDENT about myself and this is indeed a very good sign in this year ! Now i actually understand the importance of making affirmative statements and thinking positive as i am the PRODUCT of what i THINK , ” COGITO ERGO SUM ” (:

COGITO ERGO SUM
Basically, it is a latin phrase which mean I think, therefore i am.
It does not really hold truth for me. What i thought of every single time, was not really the thing that happened.
I do believe sometimes that it works.
I guess it depends on every individual. Not for me ofcourse. Though, many said that what they thought of and believed in actually do happened because they trust it will happened. It’s all about the instinct.
I occasionally got those feelings that i thought it would happened but honestly it is not neccessary that it happened.Like, i always got this bad feeling something would happened and NO, nothing happened.
They said believe you will get this, set a target, the goals you want and you will definitely achieve it. I did it, work extremely hard, set a target, nothing of the sort they described happened.I guess for me, i dont really set targets for myself, its all about working hard and giving my best shot.It will naturally happen.

Hi guys,
Wow! The posts are coming in thick and fast! Good stuff all!
The thing about Descartes is (as some of you rightly pointed out!) is that his quote has what is called “Universal Application”
It’s application involves everyone, and in a way, everything
So far, all your considerations upon the quote were retrospective ie: based on your past experience
Now that’s a logical place to begin: we look into our past to see if anything can indicate to us the validity of Descartes’ words…
However, I’d like everyone to consider prospectively now ie: using Descartes’s words to create a future you desire. How would you do that? And I don’t mean in the superficial, shallow way (”I’ll just think myself into 6 A1s!”), but rather consider how you can practically apply his words into your daily life, and using that, move yourself into a better future
It’s pretty heavy stuff, but give your ol’ head a spin!
Keep thinking!
Alex

” I THINK THEREFORE I AM ”
I believe in this pharse , because if i am always thinking in the negetive ways , i will not put in effort in whatever i am doing . However , if im thinking in the positive ways , i will try hard and make my thinking come true . The way of thinking will really affect me alot . . . I believe that in order to get what i want , i must have a positive thinking and effort =)

literally, it means “i think, therefore i am” just for the benefit for people who don’t really know what this is… though repeated through the different comments… XD
yeah! its true! it does hold a truth in me! ever since i wiki it, it did made sense to me and i started to believe in this phrase in every thing i do, be it homework, exams, competition etc… in homework, i will get to the correct answer one way or another… for exams, after meeting targets, yes i know i would get it, i anticipate it to be that way… competitions, like badminton, my cca, i have hardly any skill to defeat my opponents… but then, BELIEVE is the keyword… i know, that one day, maybe let’s say ten years down the road? i may be able to defeat my friends…
this is because you visualize yourself as the person doing that successful thing… let us say O levels… my target is to get below 8… everyday, i tell myself i WILL get that aggreigate score… and that is already in two words - “I think” and then therefore, through hard work, effort, sacrificing your time, blood, sweat and such, the results will still be there, even though you may not reach it, at least you are just that ONE step away from there… and all those i mentioned just now, indicates three words - “therefore i am”
I think to myself that I AM the person who is going to get an aggreigate score less than 8, THEREFORE I AM the person who is gonna get that aggreigate score of 8…
regards, rey… XD

I think it actually means, “i think therefore i exist” because a person who cant think could just be a part of my imagination and people who can think are real.
